Summer 2026
Philipp Preiss
Welcome to Ultracold Quantum Gases II lecture!
The first lecture will take place at 10:00 c.t. on 13.04.2026 at Schellingstr. 4 – H 107, everyone is welcome to attend!
Course Overview
This course covers intermediate and advanced topics in ultracold quantum gases. It begins with a review of the underlying physics of degenerate bosonic and fermionic systems, followed by an introduction to optical lattices and modern experimental techniques, including quantum gas microscopy. The course then explores current research directions in ultracold atoms in optical lattices, with a particular focus on the Fermi–Hubbard model, long-range interacting systems, and non-equilibrium quantum gases.
Time and Place
- Monday 10:00 to 12:00 at Schellingstr. 4 – H 107
- Wednesday 14:00 to 16:00 at Schellingstr. 4 – H 107.
Tutorial
We will set up the organization and time for tutorials at the beginning of the lecture (first week, probably).
Journal Club
A journal club will take place every Wednesday from 15:00 to 16:00. Each student will be assigned a recent academic paper related to the course and is expected to read and prepare it in advance. Students will then present the paper and lead a discussion on its key concepts, methods, and findings.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge in atomic physics and quantum mechanics is required. Familiarity with statistical physics and quantum optics, as well as prior participation in Ultracold Quantum Gases I, is useful but not required.
Syllabus
We will cover the following topics:
- Fundamentals of bosonic and fermionic degenerate quantum gases
- Ultracold atoms in optical lattices
- Quantum gas microscopes
- Hubbard models
- The Fermi-Hubbard model
- Long-range interactions
- Quantum gases far from equilibrium
